AI Workshop
Workshop co-located with IPICS (Intensive Programme on Information and Communication Security) 2024
Participating projects:
REMARKABLE, ROBUST, AIAS, DAIS, and CyberSec Pro projects
AI Workshop 2024 is a collaborative platform featuring five prominent European-funded projects: REMARKABLE, ROBUST, AIAS, DAIS, and CyberSecPro. These projects represent a diverse array of initiatives at the forefront of technological innovation, each supported by rigorous research and development efforts. During the workshop week, researchers and experts from these projects will convene to synergize their efforts and address shared challenges. The focal point of this gathering is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which serves as a cornerstone in all five projects, albeit in distinct applications—from deploying advanced IoT solutions in remote environments to developing AI-driven eHealth systems for remote patient monitoring, and from enhancing cybersecurity frameworks to fostering digital transformation in critical sectors.
This collaborative event provides a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange and exploration. Participants will engage in lively discussions, knowledge-sharing sessions, and hands-on workshops aimed at leveraging AI’s transformative potential across industries. By fostering a collaborative environment, AI Workshop 2024 aims to catalyze new ideas, forge strategic partnerships, and propel innovation forward in the realm of Artificial Intelligence.
The venue hosting the workshop will be the 7.000m2 modern building of the Polytechnic Institute of Management and Technology (ISLA) in Vila Nova de Gaia in Northern Portugal, where the famous Port wine cellars are located across from Porto city.
DAIS (Distributed Artificial Intelligent System) is a pan-European project bringing faster, more secure and energy efficient data processing solutions through the development of edge AI software and hardware components. DAIS approach is to provide trustworthy connectivity and interoperability by bringing the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence together in a distributed edge system for industrial applications. The project will feature a large variety of industry driven use cases embedded into the application domains, Digital Life, Digital Industry and Smart Mobility.
REMARKABLE (Rural Environmental Monitoring via ultra wide-ARea networKs And distriButed federated Learning) is a project funded by the European Commission under HORIZON-MSCA-2021-SE-01 – Staff Exchanges programme, comprising 11 European and 5 African institutions. The project aims at reversing further widening of the urban-rural gap. This will be done by bringing efficient and affordable IoT/ML solutions to deep rural areas, reaching out to applications and use cases ranging from wildlife management, rural tourism, livestock monitoring, water and air pollution control, and others. By identifying main gaps in connectivity and affordable data analytics and through interleaved research, development and validation in a real-world setting, REMARKABLE will address the challenge of bringing IoT and data analytics systems a step closer to seamless, energy efficient and secure deployment in rural areas.
Funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the ROBUST project aims to address the healthcare and socioeconomic impact of ill health in the elderly. The ROBUST scientific team proposes to develop a smart mobile eHealth system for remote monitoring of patients’ healing, using sensing technology to provide information on complex situations, while maintaining safety and privacy. The idea is to offer immediate feedback and assistive instructions to the patients.
AIAS is an EU funded research project which aims to design and develop an innovative AI-based security platform for the protection of AI systems’ technical robustness and AI-based operations of organisations. AIAS innovative approach relies on Adversarial AI defence methods, deception mechanisms and explainable AI solutions that empower security teams to materialise the concepts of “AI for Cybersecurity” and “Cybersecurity for AI”.
CyberSecPro’s ambition is to enhance the role of the Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) in offering hands-on and working-life skills for driving a trustworthy digital transformation in critical sectors of the economy. The enhanced HEIs will equip the workforce with the necessary capabilities to address the digital challenges and be capable to develop secure privacy aware innovative ICT and industrial products that serve people, businesses and working-life communities practicing their democratic values and rights. By establishing a unique Learning Factory, CyberSecPro will be an authentic environment to link innovation, research, industry, academia and SME support. The outcome of the CyberSecPro is to empower the NextGen Europe.
